Winter: The Parade Ground is a 1628 ink by Wenceslaus Hollar, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a busy town square packed with people. Some are walking, others are gathered in groups, and a few are riding in carriages. The buildings around the square have steep roofs, tall towers, and small windows. In the center, a small stage or platform holds a few figures, while a crowd surrounds it. The word "Hyems" at the bottom means "winter," hinting this scene might be cold. Notice how the artist used fine lines to show every detail, from people’s clothes to the buildings’ shadows.
