Isabella d'Este is a 1658 ink by Pieter Holsteyn II, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white engraving shows a woman with a huge, curly wig and a stiff collar. She’s holding a fan and a bunch of grapes, wearing layers of ruffled fabric. Behind her, two smaller figures stand in a dark doorway—one holds a torch, the other a scroll. The woman’s outfit looks heavy and formal, like something from a fancy court. The artist used fine lines to show the folds in her clothes and the texture of her jewelry. If you like this style, check out Baroque for more dramatic, detailed art.
Pieter Holsteyn II (1614–1673) was a Dutch artist, born in Haarlem.
