Leaf 8 from an antiphonal fragment is a 1275 ink by Italian 13th Century, held at National Gallery of Art.
This page shows old handwritten text in Latin with red and brown ink. The letters are in neat rows, and each line has little black squares along it—like a musical score. One letter at the start of a line is decorated with red and blue swirls. The paper looks yellowed and worn, like it’s very old. The black squares might be notes for singing, not just words. This kind of book was used in churches for religious songs. Check out the National Gallery of Art, Washington to see more pages like this.
This artist shaped the look of church music between 1250 and 1299, painting bold red-and-blue initials on vellum pages meant for choirs.
