Christ on the Mount of Olives is a 1743 ink by John Baptist Jackson, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a dramatic scene of Christ alone on a rocky hill, surrounded by swirling clouds and wind. His arms are outstretched, and his face looks upward, as if praying or in deep thought. Below him, a small group of sleeping disciples sprawls across the ground, their forms tangled and relaxed. The dark, shadowy background contrasts sharply with the lighter, almost glowing figure of Christ, creating a sense of tension. The artist used layers of color to build up the scene, making the figures stand out against the stormy sky. This is a *woodcut* technique, where blocks of wood are carved and inked to print layered colors.
John Baptist Jackson (1701–1780) was a British artist, a woodcut printmaker of the eighteenth century.
