Study for "Au Bouquet de persil," (A Bouquet of Parsley) is a 1833 by Jean-Jacques Grandville, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a busy street scene with two figures in the center. One person holds a large umbrella over a seated man who looks like he’s adjusting his hat or tie. Around them, small, cartoonish faces peek out from baskets, jugs, and vases on a table. The drawing is loose and sketchy, with quick lines and shading. The artist packed a lot of odd details into this small scene—like the faces hidden in everyday objects. It’s playful and a little strange, which fits the time period. Next, check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see this sketch in person.
Jean-Jacques Grandville (1803–1847) was a French artist.
