Untitled is a 1780 ink by Kitao Shigemasa, a Baroque work, depicting Horse, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows two scenes side by side. On the left, a man in fancy robes sits on a raised platform while two attendants stand nearby—one holding a fan, the other a scroll. On the right, a group of people gather around a horse, with one man in red robes holding its bridle while others watch or assist. The horse’s tail is drawn with quick, flowing lines, and the background includes a simple bridge and a lone pine tree. The colors are muted but bright in spots, like the red robe and the green of the tree. Look up cross-hatching next to see how artists build shading with lines.
Kitao Shigemasa (北尾 重政; 1739 – 8 March 1820) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist from Edo.
