À Bordeaux (At Bordeaux) is a 1866 ink by Maxime Lalanne, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a busy harbor packed with ships. Tall sailing boats line the docks, while smaller boats float in the water. In the distance, a city skyline with a spire stands over the scene. The artist used fine lines to show light and shadow, making the boats and buildings look almost three-dimensional. The water and sky are simple but full of tiny details. Want to see how this technique works? Look up engraving.
François Antoine Maxime Lalanne (November 27, 1827 – July 29, 1886) was a French artist known for his etchings and charcoal drawings (fusain).
