Exterior View of the Chapel of the Cardinal (Veduta esterna della cappella del cardinale) [plate G] is a 1612 ink by Jacopo Ligozzi, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a small brick chapel surrounded by big trees. A rocky hillside is in front of it, with a hidden set of stairs. The trees have thick branches and lots of leaves, making the chapel look like it’s tucked away in nature. The trick here? Lift the paper. Under the rock, there are stairs carved into the hillside. This was done using a special printing trick where one layer hides another. Want to see how this works? Look up engraving.
Jacopo Ligozzi (1547–1627) was an Italian painter, illustrator, designer, and miniaturist. His art can be categorized as late-Renaissance and Mannerist styles.
