About this work

This sketch shows a quiet countryside scene with rows of haystacks in a field. The hills in the background are lightly drawn, and a few trees dot the landscape. The lines are loose and quick, giving it a sketchy, unfinished feel. The artist used black chalk and added white highlights to suggest light and shadow. This technique makes the haystacks stand out against the softer hills. Next, check out the technique: chiaroscuro to see how light and dark create depth.
