This painting shows a rocky Syrian shoreline with waves crashing onto the beach. The colors are muted—mostly grays and browns—with a few bright accents in the clothing of two figures standing near the water. The scene feels quiet but full of movement. It’s part of a larger series from a trip through the Middle East. The artist took photos first, then painted from them later. You can still see the way light plays on the rocks and sand. The Cleveland Museum of Art owns this piece.
