About this work

This black-and-white print shows a dramatic scene with a bearded man in the center, holding a spear and sitting on a rock. Around him, other figures—some with wings, others tangled in cloth—look up or reach out. The background is dark and swirling, while the man’s face is lit from above, making his features stand out. Notice how the artist used light and shadow to create depth, especially on the man’s face and the figures behind him. This was a common trick in Renaissance art to make scenes feel three-dimensional. Look up chiaroscuro to see how artists used light and dark to add drama to their work.
