Saint John is a 1518 ink by Lucas van Leyden, a Renaissance work, depicting John the Evangelist, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows Saint John the Evangelist with a halo, holding a book and quill. His robe has deep folds that catch the light. The background is mostly blank, so your eyes stay on him. Lucas van Leyden made this in 1518. He used cross-hatching to create shadows and textures. The lines are so fine they look like a drawing. Look up engraving if you want to see how prints are made.
Lucas van Leyden (1494 – 8 August 1533), was a Dutch painter and printmaker in engraving and woodcut. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and was a very accomplished engraver.
