Victor Amedeo I, Duke of Savoy is a 1734 ink by Pierre-Jean Mariette, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a man with a mustache and curly hair. He’s wearing a fancy lace collar and a dark jacket over armor. The border around him is carved with swirls and leaves, like a frame. Below his face, there’s writing: *"Victor Amedeo Duc de Savoye et Prince de Piémont."* The artist used fine lines to show texture, like the folds in his clothes. This kind of detailed line work is called *cross-hatching*—layers of lines to make shadows. If you like this style, check out engraving next to see how artists create depth with just ink and lines.
Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694–1774) was an artist.
