George Washington is a 1862 ink by William Edgar Marshall, a Impressionism work, depicting George Washington, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows George Washington in profile, facing right. The lines are crisp and deep, made by pressing a sharp tool into the paperboard. Cross-hatching fills the background, creating solid blacks and smooth grays without any color. Engraving was a common way to spread Washington’s image in the 1800s. Printers used these plates to print many copies for books and newspapers. Look up the National Gallery of Art, Washington to see this print.
