Christ on the Cross [recto] is a 1474 ink by Master of the Drapery Studies, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a naked man nailed to a cross, arms spread wide. His head is tilted back, eyes closed, and a crown of thorns sits on his forehead. The paper is a light tan, and the artist used quick ink lines to sketch muscles and cloth draped around his hips. Notice how the artist left some areas sketchy while adding darker washes for shadows—like under his arms and around his waist. The paper looks old, with faint cracks running through it. If you like this style, look up cross-hatching next.
