Christ on the Cross is a 1560 chalk by Girolamo Muziano, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a naked man nailed to a cross, arms spread wide. His body is drawn in red chalk on tan paper, with faint grid lines behind him. The lines are loose but show muscles and posture clearly. The paper has a grid—artists used this to copy the drawing onto bigger surfaces. The red chalk looks soft, almost like a sketch. Girolamo Muziano or Mutiani (c. 1532 – 1592), was an Italian painter, one of the most prominent artists active in Rome in the mid-to-late sixteenth century.
