About this work

This watercolor shows a simple pottery jug with a short spout. Light hits the jug’s curves. The background is plain white. Millais was only 22 when he painted it. He used pencil first, then layered watercolor to build color and depth. You can see tiny pencil lines under the paint. The way he handled light and texture here is worth a closer look.
