Caricatures of Clerics and Priests is a 1650 ink by Pier Francesco Mola, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows five quick, rough drawings of men in religious clothes. One stands tall in the center, wearing a hat and robes. The others lean in, some with big heads or exaggerated faces. The lines are loose, almost like doodles, and the paper looks old and yellow. The artist used thin, repeated lines to fill in shadows—this is called *cross-hatching*. It gives the drawings a textured look, even though they’re just ink on paper. Next, check out *cross-hatching* to see how artists build depth with lines.
Pier Francesco Mola, called Il Ticinese was an Italian painter of the High Baroque, mainly active around Rome.
