Francois Servien is a 1656 ink by Robert Nanteuil, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a man in a dark coat and lace collar. He’s wearing a cross around his neck and has a serious expression. Below his chin sits a shield with a coat of arms—two crossed swords and a crown on top. The artist used fine lines to create texture, especially in the lace and hair. This was done by layering tiny strokes, a method called cross-hatching. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with lines.
