About this work

This sketch shows a strange metal machine with two curved arms and a long beam. It’s drawn in pencil with quick, messy lines and lots of notes scribbled around it. The artist labeled parts like "Going Tornado," "Blind’s Bite," and "Horizontal Ram," along with arrows showing how it might move. The notes talk about cycles and ideas, like "emotional experience" and "propagation of things." The machine looks like it’s meant to do something, but the drawing is more about the thoughts behind it than the final object. The story of this work

Overview

A design drawing from 1976 for the installation *Gradually Going Tornado*, specifically for the section titled *The Subject, Generator*, depicts a narrow table with legs rendered in distorted perspective, positioned above several lines of ink writing. The drawing is one of three (Circ.37, 37a, and 37b) that outline components of the larger work, which includes wooden constructions, some featuring distorted perspective and glass elements. The artist provided explanations of the components in the exhibition catalogue for *Gradually Going Tornado* at Sunderland Arts Centre in 1975.
