Ornament Panel with Orpheus and the Judgment of Paris is a 1507 ink by Nicoletto da Modena, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image is packed with tiny scenes inside framed boxes. At the center, a group of people—some naked, some with wings—stand around a woman holding an apple. Around them, other boxes show animals, hunters, and figures playing instruments. The edges are filled with swirling vines, leaves, and strange creatures. Notice how the lines create both solid shapes and shading—this is done with a technique called *cross-hatching*. The artist layered lines to make dark and light areas without color. Look up cross-hatching to see how it works in more detail.
Nicoletto da Modena (1490–1569) was an artist, born in Modena.
