This engraving shows a knight in heavy armor standing over a dragon. The knight holds a spear and a shield with a cross on it. Behind him is a tall, fancy building with columns and a balcony. The dragon lies twisted on the ground, and a small figure near it looks up at the knight. Notice how the artist used lots of tiny lines to create shadows and texture—this is called cross-hatching. The scene looks dramatic but is drawn with careful detail. Next, look up cross-hatching to see how artists use lines to build depth.
