About this work

The painting shows a young girl turning her head to look at the viewer. She's staring right at us. The artist used light and shadows to create a sense of depth, with half of her face in darkness. This use of light and shadows is interesting because it adds a sense of mystery to the portrait. The artist's use of shadows is an example of the technique: chiaroscuro.
