About this work

This photo shows a plain doorway with two tall columns and a flat roof. Above the door, there’s a small carving of a face on each side. The walls are bare, and the floor looks like rough stone. The door itself is wooden with two small windows and a single handle. The photo was taken in the 1860s, but the doorway itself is much older. The carvings above the door might be from the 700s, while the rest of the doorway was rebuilt later. Check out Parker, John Henry—he took this photo.
