About this work

This photo shows a dimly lit room packed with old statues and carvings. A large bronze horse stands in the center, its head turned slightly. Around it are framed plaques with writing, a small statue of a man in a toga, and a bust in a round frame. The walls are decorated with faded gold trim and dark marble shelves. The horse’s base has tiny figures under its belly, almost hidden. The room looks like a mix of a museum and a study, with tools and papers scattered on the floor. The story of this work

Overview

A photograph mounted on card, this image is part of a collection of over 3,300 photographs documenting key monuments in Rome, spanning from antiquity to the 1600s, taken between 1867 and 1870 under the direction of John Henry Parker. The project involved multiple local photographers, including De Bonis, Filippo Spina, and Carlo Baldassare Simelli, among others, with additional contributions from Canadian photographer Charles Smeaton. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a selection of the most notable works from this extensive documentation.
