Brasserie, Au Lion Rouge is a 1893 ink by Joseph Pennell, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a crowded room with people sitting at tables, drinking and talking. Above them is a patterned wallpaper with floral designs. The top of the image has fancy lettering spelling out "Brasserie Au Lion Rouge," and there’s a banner with more text. The artist used a simple, sketchy style to show the scene quickly. The lines are rough, and the shading is light, giving it a loose, almost hurried feel. Check out etching to see how artists like this one create detailed prints with acid and metal plates.
Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857 – April 23, 1926) was an American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator for books and magazines.
