Sunrise Behind Temple of Concord, Girgenti is a 1913 ink by Joseph Pennell, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a crumbling temple with three tall columns. The roof is flat and broken in spots, and the steps in front look worn down. Shadows stretch across the ground, and a few plants peek in at the bottom corners. The artist used quick, sketchy lines to show light hitting the temple at dawn. The rough edges make it feel old and weathered. Look up lithography to see how this print was made.
Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857 – April 23, 1926) was an American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator for books and magazines.
