Temple of Jupiter, Evening is a 1913 ink by Joseph Pennell, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a tall, crumbling stone wall with a narrow opening in the center. Through the gap, you see a dim, distant view of a building and a faint sky. The whole image is in soft grays and blacks, with rough, sketchy lines. The wall looks old and weathered, almost like it’s falling apart. The artist used a simple, quick style to show the contrast between the dark wall and the lighter background. Try looking up lithography next to see how this print was made.
Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857 – April 23, 1926) was an American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator for books and magazines.
