About this work

Technique & Style

Figures and animals are rendered with precise, almost miniature clarity, characteristic of Wouwerman’s small-scale cabinet pieces on metal supports.

The work is painted in oil on copper, a support that lends a fine-grained, reflective surface and supports crisp detail in the foliage and figures. Handling emphasizes delicate modeling of light across the stag’s hide and the translucent foliage, with a restrained palette dominated by silvery greens and warm browns. The composition balances a diagonal thrust from the hunters and hounds toward the fleeing stag against the vertical accents of trees, creating a harmonious rhythm.

History & Provenance

The copper panel The Stag Hunt by Philips Wouwerman is dated to 1650 and was painted in Haarlem, where Wouwerman was active. The work entered the noted Dutch collection of Adriaan Leonard van Heteren Gevers, whose cabinet formed the core of the Kabinet van Heteren Gevers at the Rijksmuseum. By 1752 it had passed to the dealer Willem Lormier, then to Lormier’s daughter Henrica Cunera Lormier-van Olden, and subsequently to Adriaan Leonard van Heteren.

It was later owned by Jacob de Wit before entering the Rijksmuseum’s holdings as part of the Kabinet van Heteren Gevers.

Legacy

The stag hunt has been recognized as an influential example of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting, particularly for its dynamic composition and integration of wildlife subjects within naturalistic settings. Its technical execution on copper and use of oil paint have contributed to its preservation and study within art historical discourse. The work's attribution to Philips Wouwerman and its presence in the Rijksmuseum collection have reinforced its reputation as a significant piece within the artist's oeuvre and the broader Dutch Golden Age tradition.

Overview

Created circa 1650, The Stag Hunt is a copper panel painting by Dutch artist Philips Wouwerman. Executed during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, the work presents a lively hunting scene set within a gently rolling landscape. The composition is now part of the Rijksmuseum’s collection, where it is displayed among other 17th‑century Dutch works.

Subject & Meaning

The image captures mounted hunters in pursuit of a stag that darts through a forested area. A weathered stone tower, overgrown with ivy, rises in the distance, while a modest village nestles among the hills. Though the chase suggests action, the overall atmosphere is tranquil, emphasizing the harmony between man, animal, and countryside.

Context

During the mid‑17th century, Dutch artists frequently depicted hunting as a symbol of aristocratic leisure and the bounty of the land. Wouwerman’s work aligns with this tradition, combining detailed observation of equestrian anatomy with a picturesque countryside, a formula that appealed to the burgeoning middle‑class market for decorative yet narrative art.
