Agra. The Fort is a 1890 by Photoglob Co., a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
You see a towering red sandstone wall stretching across the picture, with tiny travelers resting in the shade at its base. This photo was made by a Swiss company that sold travel views to tourists in the 1890s. The travelers in the foreground make the fort look even bigger—like a postcard with a built-in ruler. If you like old travel photos, look up more under subject: india, 19th century.
Known as the Red Fort because of the rosy sandstone used to build it; the fort was a walled city that served as home to the Mughal emperors until 1638. The height and massiveness of the walls are emphasized by the inclusion of the Indian travelers resting in the foreground.
It took 1,444,000 builders eight years to build the sandstone fort, which was completed in 1573.
