Saint Rosalia Crowned by the Child Jesus is a 1630 ink by Paulus Pontius, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a group of figures in a dramatic scene. A woman holds a baby while two older men and a kneeling girl watch. Angels float above, and a book lies open on the floor. The woman wears a crown, and the baby reaches toward her. The tiny lines crisscrossing the image create shadows and texture—this is called cross-hatching. It makes the scene look almost three-dimensional. Check out how artists use cross-hatching to build depth in their work.
Paulus Pontius (27 May 1603 – 16 January 1658) was a Flemish engraver and painter.
