Madonna with Saints Agnes, Catherine and Rosa is a 1754 by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a group of women and a baby in a dim, rocky setting. The woman holding the baby stands in the center, dressed in flowing robes. Behind her, another woman floats above, holding a cross. To the left, a kneeling woman looks up at them, while a third woman stands nearby, also in robes. The scene feels crowded but calm, with rough textures and soft shadows. The baby is the only one looking directly out, almost like it’s aware of the viewer. The artist used deep contrasts between light and dark to make the figures stand out against the rocky background. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how this lighting trick works.
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (August 30, 1727 – March 3, 1804) was an Italian painter and printmaker in etching. He was the son of artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and elder brother of Lorenzo Baldissera Tiepolo.
