About this work

This sketch shows a crumbling old church with rounded arches and a small tower. The walls are made of rough stones, some missing or broken, and the roof looks weathered. In front, a gate stands slightly open, leading to a dark doorway. The artist focused on worn textures—every crack and shadow in the stone. This was drawn in the 1800s when artists often studied ruins to show time’s passage. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists build shading with lines.
