Les Munitionaires du 28 Juillet is a 1830 ink by Auguste Raffet, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a chaotic street moment. A crowd of people—some in work clothes, others in hats—stands around a man in a tall hat holding a gun. Kids peek out from behind adults, and a horse lies on the ground nearby. The background has buildings and a sign that’s hard to read. The title hints this might be about a protest or uprising, but the focus is on the messy, crowded energy. The artist used quick, sketchy lines to show movement and tension. Denis Auguste Marie Raffet (2 March 1804 – 16 February 1860) was a French illustrator and lithographer. He was a student of Nicolas Toussaint Charlet, and was a retrospective painter of the Empire.
