In der Ramsau bei Salzburg (In the Ramsau near Salzburg) is a 1830 ink by Ludwig Richter, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a mountain valley with rough cliffs. A woman in a wide hat walks sheep along a path. Nearby, a family sits by a small fire, cooking. Trees and bushes fill the valley, and the sky is faint but visible above the peaks. The artist used a sharp tool to carve lines into metal, then inked them to make the print. This method is called *etching*. Look up etching to see how it works.
Adrian Ludwig Richter (September 28, 1803 – June 19, 1884) was a German painter and etcher, who was strongly influenced by Erhard and Chodowiecki.
