Lesken ropo
From the collection of Finnish National Gallery
Lesken ropo is a work by Georg von Rosen, held at Finnish National Gallery.
This drawing shows a snowy street scene with people gathered outside a small building. A woman in a long dark coat stands near a pillar, handing something to a nun in a white head covering. Two children watch nearby, while other figures—some in robes—stand around a doorway or window. The light is dim, and the ground is dusted with snow. Notice how the artist used tiny lines to create shadows and texture—this is called cross-hatching. It gives the scene a rough, almost sketchy feel, like a quick study. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists build depth with just lines.
Johan Georg Otto von Rosen (13 February 1843 – 3 March 1923) was a Swedish painter and greve (count). He specialized in history paintings and portraits, done in the Academic style.
