Mezzetin and Harlequin, Disguised as the Captain, Disrupt Pantaloon's Dinner is a 1729 ink by Johann Jacob Schübler, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a chaotic scene of six masked figures in a grand room. One man in a tall hat and coat holds a flag, while another in a cap stands on a stool. A third figure, mid-jump, seems to be kicking someone else, who’s holding a lantern. The room has fancy moldings, a chandelier, and a table with a chess set. The figures’ costumes and wild poses suggest they’re playing characters from old comedies. The artist used quick, sketchy lines to show movement and drama. Next, look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with lines.
