Maine Coast is a 1861 gouache by Aaron Draper Shattuck, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a rocky coastline with waves crashing against jagged cliffs. A few small buildings sit near the shore, and trees dot the hills behind them. The sky is light with scattered clouds, and the whole scene feels rough and textured. The artist used soft pencil and a watery paint called gouache to keep it loose and quick. It looks like they were working fast, maybe outside, to catch the light and mood of the place. Next, check out gouache—it’s a paint that mixes water with pigment and gum, letting artists blend colors smoothly or leave them flat.
Aaron Draper Shattuck (March 9, 1832 – July 30, 1928) was an American painter of the White Mountain School.
