Yachts in the Estuary is a 1938 watercolor by Sir Walter Westley Russell, a British Romanticism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This sketch shows three tall ships with thin sails anchored in a flat, sandy estuary. The water is calm, and the land around them is mostly empty, with just a few small bushes or rocks. The colors are soft—light browns and grays—like a quiet, hazy day. The ships look old-fashioned, with their high masts and simple rigging. The artist used loose, quick strokes, making the scene feel sketchy and quick to capture. Next, check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more of this artist’s work.
