Untitled is a 1762 by Lavinia Spencer, a Romanticism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This sketch shows two women sitting on the ground, one with her legs tucked under her and the other kneeling. Behind them is a vase with flowers, and the background has loose, wavy lines that look like wind or hair. The drawing is rough and quick, with lots of shading to show folds in their clothes and the texture of the vase. The artist used a technique called cross-hatching to build up shadows and shapes. The lines overlap in places to create darker areas, like on the women’s dresses and the vase. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more of this artist’s sketches.
The painting depicts two women in an interior setting, one seated on a stool and the other on the floor with a small dog in her lap. An urn filled with flowers and a draped curtain are visible in the background.
