In the Rain: Mother and Children (Sous la pluie: La mere et les enfants) is a 1915 ink by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows four people walking through shallow water, bundled in heavy coats and hats. The mother in the center carries a baby on her back and holds a bag, while the other two kids—one older, one younger—clutch their own sacks. Trees and power lines loom in the background, and the whole scene looks cold and hurried. The artist used loose, scratchy lines to show movement and texture, especially in the wet ground and flowing clothes. This style makes the scene feel quick and raw. Next, check out the technique: etching, drypoint, aquatint to see how artists create these kinds of marks.
Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (November 10, 1859 – December 13, 1923), was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. He was politically engaged and collaborated with the anarchist and socialist press.
