The work entered the collection of Oliver Wolcott, who owned it by 1829, and passed to his son John Stoughton Wolcott before being sold in 1844 by the elder Wolcott’s estate to William Jay. Jay’s descendants, John Jay II and William Jay II, held the painting, which subsequently passed to Eleanor Jay Iselin and then to her son William Jay Iselin, who gifted it by 1937.
The Avalon Foundation acquired it in 1952 for the National Gallery of Art, where it remains on display in Washington, D.C.
