East Cliff House, Ramsgate is a 1850 watercolor by Joseph Mallord William Turner, depicting Palace, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows a grand, pale building with two tall towers and lots of windows. In front of it, two people push a wheelbarrow while a dog sits nearby. The sky is soft with light clouds, and the grassy area looks calm. The building’s design looks like a mix of old castle and fancy home. The artist focused on the light hitting the walls, making it glow slightly. If you like this, check out Turner, Joseph Mallord William for more of his work.
The watercolour depicts East Cliff House in Ramsgate from the front, showing two gardeners resting in the foreground alongside dogs. The Gothic Revival-style residence, designed by Charles Boncey and completed around 1794, features a crenellated roofline, two towers with spires, a clock, weather vanes, and a compass rose. The house had notable owners including naval officer George Elphinstone and financier Moses Haim Montefiore. Turner’s work captures the architectural details and tranquil setting of the property.
