東海道五十三次 二川 猿ヶ馬場|Futagawa is a 1840 ink by Utagawa Hiroshige, a Romanticism work, depicting Market, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows a busy roadside stop with two groups of people. On the left, three men sit under a roofed shelter, maybe resting or eating. On the right, a group of travelers is gathered around a table, some standing, others sitting—one man is shirtless, possibly helping with luggage or a pack animal. A woman in a wide-brimmed hat walks between them, carrying a bundle. Tall trees frame the scene, and a few cows graze in the background. Notice how the artist uses flat colors and clean outlines to keep the scene lively but orderly. The text along the top and right edge hints at a specific location, but the focus is on everyday life along the road. Look up Utagawa Hiroshige next to see more prints like this one.
Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重) or Andō Hiroshige (安藤 広重), born Andō Tokutarō (安藤 徳太郎; 1797 – 12 October 1858), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition.
