木曽海道六拾九次之内 大井|Ōi Station is a 1835 ink by Utagawa Hiroshige, a Romanticism work, depicting Human Figure, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows a snowy mountain road with travelers and horses. The sky is dark, but snow sparkles on the ground. Pine trees stand stiff against the cold, and a few bare branches lean in. Three people walk ahead, bundled in coats and hats, while another person rides a horse behind them. The red seals and Japanese text hint this is a travel scene from an old road. The artist used bold outlines and flat colors, which makes the scene feel simple but lively. Next, look up cross-hatching to see how artists build depth with lines.
Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重) or Andō Hiroshige (安藤 広重), born Andō Tokutarō (安藤 徳太郎; 1797 – 12 October 1858), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition.
