江戸高名会亭尽 湯島 松琴亭|Yushima (Matsu Kane-ya) is a 1840 ink by Utagawa Hiroshige, a Romanticism work, depicting Reading, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows a quiet indoor scene with six people sitting on the floor around low tables. Some are writing, others are reading or chatting, while a few hold scrolls or brushes. Outside the sliding doors, you can see a snowy landscape with small buildings and distant mountains under a pale sky. Notice the mix of focus and relaxation—one person is carefully writing, while others seem to be taking a break. The text on the scroll and sign hints at a specific place, but the mood feels calm and everyday. If you like this scene, look up reading, writing to see how these activities were often shown in Japanese art.
Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重) or Andō Hiroshige (安藤 広重), born Andō Tokutarō (安藤 徳太郎; 1797 – 12 October 1858), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition.
