江戸高名会亭尽 池之端 蓬莱亭 青楼花見の休み|Ikeno Mata (Horai-ya) is a 1840 ink by Utagawa Hiroshige, a Romanticism work, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows a group of people in a covered pavilion by a lake. The roof has wooden slats, and the people wear colorful robes and hats. Some are sitting, some stand, and one woman holds a fan. Behind them, a calm body of water reflects the sky, with buildings and trees in the distance. Look closer at the text at the top—it’s written in Japanese and includes a poem about cherry blossoms. The artist used bold colors and simple shapes to show a lively scene. Next, check out Utagawa Hiroshige to see how he painted other famous landscapes.
Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重) or Andō Hiroshige (安藤 広重), born Andō Tokutarō (安藤 徳太郎; 1797 – 12 October 1858), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition.
