This photo shows May Fortescue, an actress from the late 1800s. It was taken by W. & D. Downey in London. In that era, photos of actors were big business. Studios sold them as small “cartes de visite” first, then larger “cabinet cards.” Both were made with glass negatives and pasted on stiff card stock.
