About this work

Kent made this drawing of Tivoli around 1719. It’s a study page—front shows the view, back holds a sketch of carved figures and swirling patterns. He kept it simple, just lines on paper. Kent traveled to Rome in 1715. There he met the Earl of Burlington, who later helped launch Kent’s architecture career back in London. The drawing hints at how Kent mixed travel sketches with future designs. Look up the Victoria and Albert Museum next.
