Venetian Canal is a 1902 by William Wentworth Stevens, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a narrow canal flanked by tall buildings. On the left, a tree with thick branches leans over the water. In the distance, a bridge arches over the canal, and a gondola glides toward the viewer. The right side has a building with a balcony and a small figure standing there. The water is textured with wavy lines, and the buildings have detailed, crisscrossing patterns. The artist used only black ink on a light background to create deep contrast. The way light and shadow play on the buildings and water makes the scene feel alive, even though it’s just lines. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and dark for drama.
